Pool side at The Brook on Janes

Fire up the grill, it’s Memorial Day Weekend! If you’re fortunate to have the added day off from work, it looks like the sunshine will be sticking around, making it a perfect, extended weekend to informally kick-off summer. Make a poolside splash of it right here at home or sink into a poolside cabana and get lost in a good book. It looks like perfect weather for the pups to meet and greet, too, and they’re sure to run into an old pal or new friend in our own gated dog park.

The long weekend means extra time to head into the Village where the Memorial Day Weekend Carnival takes center stage. Hop on a community cruiser and head over to Village Hall and see what all the fuss is about. Friday through Monday, the annual event features 4-days of fun with games, rides, and signature foods. Hours run until 10:00 PM each evening with things wrapping up at 6:00 PM on Monday. Wristband specials run throughout, so check specific dates and times if you or your crew want the biggest bang for your buck.

Not too far from home, the Red, White, and Bar-B-Q festival and competition also runs weekend-long from Friday through Sunday, May 25-27. Westmont’s Ty Warner Park plays host for three days of live music and what’s touted as the state’s biggest and best barbecue competition. With categories for professionals and amateurs, you’ll see sauces of all sorts, right to and through the Sunday night finish. Results and awards are scheduled for 4:30 PM on Saturday, and demos, vendors, performances, and the likes run right through Sunday evening.

Come Monday, reserve time to honor our fallen heroes and Gold Star families. Memorial Day Services will take place across the village that morning. Naperville’s Memorial Day Parade kicks off at 10:30 AM, too, with an observance to follow at 12:15. Even earlier that morning, flight of foot will take to the starting line of Run for the Brave: an 8:00 AM 5K in nearby Plainfield. All ages and abilities are invited and encouraged, and event proceeds benefit those who’ve given so much for us.

The signs of impending summer are unmistakable this weekend, so be sure to get out for a bit of the action!

Weekend Happenings

The Promenade Bolingbrook hosts a Progressive Dinner the last Wednesday of each month through October. This month’s takes place from 6:00-8:00 PM on the 30th and offers diners a chance to experience a single meal spread across three Bolingbrook favorites. With appetizer at one, entrée at another, and dessert at a third, it’s an awesome way to explore a range of menus and spaces while enjoying mixed and changing company. Check out this month’s groups and slide into your favorite combination.

Cooking and eating food outdoors makes it taste infinitely better than the same meal prepared and consumed indoors.
